Understanding Chemical Grading Standards: Reagent, Laboratory and Technical

How Are Chemicals Graded?

  • U.S.P

1. Reagent

Reagent chemicals are high purity chemicals and meet the standards set by the American Chemical Society. They are ideal for use in a research and development laboratory.

2. U.S.P.

U.S.P is an acronym for United States Pharmacopeia (USP). USP grade chemicals are chemicals with sufficient purity to be used for food, drug, or medicinal use. They can also be used for laboratory work.

3. Technical

All the chemicals used in an industrial environment are technical grade. Their quality is sufficiently high enough to be used in large scale commercial manufacturing. In terms of purity, they are much lower than Reagent and U.S.P grade chemicals. The reason for this is that technical grade chemicals contain a small number of other chemicals and impurities.

4. Laboratory

Laboratory grade chemicals have more or less the same applications as reagent grade chemicals. The only difference is that the former is not as pure as the latter. However, impurities in lab-grade chemicals are not excessive.

5. Practical Grade

In terms of purity, practical grade chemicals are lower-intermediate. They are not subjected to any specific standard tests but it is a given that practical grade chemicals contain an acceptable amount of impurities. They are widely used in the manufacturing industry.
